What is 8D audio, and how does it work?
8D audio explained — binaural spatialisation, HRTF, why it only works on headphones, and how to make your own 8D songs with the right rotation speed and reverb.

“8D audio” went viral in 2018 with songs that seemed to circle around the listener’s head. The name is marketing — there’s no eighth dimension — but the effect is real, and it comes from how your brain locates sound.
How your ears locate sound
Your brain uses three main cues to tell where a sound is coming from:
- Timing. A sound on your left reaches your left ear a fraction of a millisecond before your right ear.
- Level. Your head shadows the far ear, so the sound is quieter there — especially high frequencies.
- Spectral shape. The folds of your outer ear filter sound differently depending on whether it comes from in front, behind, above or below.
Together these are described by a head-related transfer function (HRTF): a set of filters that turns a plain sound into what your ears would hear if it came from a specific direction.
What “8D” actually does
Cheap 8D effects just pan the song left and right. Real 8D processing moves the sound around a virtual head with HRTF filtering, so it passes in front of and behind you, not just through the middle. Add reverb and you get the sensation of a song travelling around a room.
Slowed Room uses the browser’s HRTF panner to move the music in a circle around the listener, blended with the original stereo mix by the 8D orbit amount.
Why it only works on headphones
HRTF cues depend on each ear receiving its own signal. With speakers, both ears hear both speakers, the room adds its own reflections, and the cues cancel out. You’ll hear some movement, but the “around your head” effect needs headphones or earbuds.
Settings that sound good
- Orbit speed: one turn every 6–10 seconds. Faster than about 3 seconds per turn gets dizzying.
- Orbit amount: 100% for the full effect; 50–70% keeps more of the original stereo mix.
- Reverb: a hall at 25–35% makes the space believable.
- Bass: low frequencies don’t localise well, so a little bass boost keeps the track grounded.
8D preset: ~8 s per turn, hall 28%
Can 8D be combined with slowed + reverb?
Yes — that’s one of the most popular combinations. Apply the Slowed + Reverb preset, then raise 8D orbit under Atmosphere. Our 8D audio converter page has more starting points.
